Lugol’s 2% Solution – A more affordable iodine source
In 1829 a French physician by the name of Dr J.G.A. Lugol formulated an iodine/potassium iodide aqueous compound which came to be called Lugol’s Solution, which is still available today. Although many people, including myself, prefer the convenience of Lugol’s in a tablet form (AKA: Iodoral), we now offer Lugol’s Solution 2% as an inexpensive alternative. 5 drops of Lugol’s Solution 2% contains the iodine equivalent of one 12.5 mg Iodoral tablet. There are approximately 1200 vertical drops in a 2 oz bottle of Lugol’s 2% which is equivalent to 240 12.5 mg Iodoral tablets! It’s the cheapest way to get the iodine you need. Try it in your coffee or juice.
The iodine in Lugol’s is an essential element. Although its main function is in the production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, other organs in the body have a need for iodine in order to function normally. Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between low iodine intake and fibrocystic disease of the breast (FDB), both in women and laboratory animals. The minimum amount of iodine required for control and prevention of FDB is equivalent to 0.1mg/kg body weight/day. For example, for a 50 kg woman, the daily amount of iodine would be 5 mg. The thyroid gland needs the iodide in Iodoral to function properly.
